Edith Ellis Gary, age 99, of Bowling Green, Ky. passed away peacefully on Sunday, Dec. 3, 2023 at The Bungalows Assisted Living Facility.  She was born on June 1, 1924 in Reedyville, Ky. to the late Sibert and Thelma Sailings Ellis.  She was a teacher for the Butler Co. School System and retired after teaching elementary school for 35 years.  She started her teaching career at Centro School, a one-room schoolhouse.  She received a Bachelor of Science from Western Kentucky State College and Master of Arts from Western Kentucky University.  She was a proud alumna and a dedicated Hilltopper basketball fan.  She was an active member of many organizations and clubs, including the Kentucky Retired Teacher’s Association and the Reedyville Rural Development Club.  She was a long-time member of the Bethlehem Church of Christ.  In her later years, she and her family made quilts for those in need, including cancer patients, veterans, people in nursing homes and families.  She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Rodney Gary; daughter Sharon Gary; sister Myra Woosley; brother J.B. Ellis; nephew Stevie.

She is survived by her daughters Karon Booth (Jim) and Barbara Canter (Thomas); grandchildren Christy Basham, Timmy Basham (Angie) and Jamie Booth; great-grandchildren Laura, Lindsey, Dakota and Trevor; four great-great grandchildren; nieces Sheila, Kathy, Paula and Laun-ene; nephews Alan, Bobby, Gary and Boyd.

Funeral Service will be held at Smith Funeral Home on Sunday, Dec. 10, 2023 at 2:00pm with Bro. William Turner officiating.  Burial will follow in the Threlkel Cemetery.  Visitation will be held on Saturday, Dec. 9 from 3:00pm until 8:00pm and Sunday from 12:00pm until 2:00pm at Smith Funeral Home.
