Soybean Population Study on Cohron Farm in 2015 Shows No Difference in Yield

In the spring of 2015, Craig Cohron worked with the Butler County Extension Service to plant a soybean population trial.  Soybeans were planted following a winter forage crop in early June with a John Deere 1780 planter in 15 inch rows.  Soybeans were planted at 3 populations by changing gears on the planter transmission.  The beans were treated just like the remainder of the field.  They were fertilized and kept weed free.  The soybeans were harvested October 14 with a 1660 Case IH combine and a 20 foot 1020 header.  Harvested soybeans were weighed using a special wagon with scales under it.  The weigh wagon results were the same as the results from the combine yield monitor.  The soybeans were 12% moisture.  Caleb Smithson from Drake’s Farm Service assisted with the weighing of plots during harvest.  The results from the non-replicated trial are as follows:
Population        bu/acre
100 K Seeds        63.33
150 K Seeds        62.71
200 K Seeds        62.50

These data are consistent with University of Kentucky research on planting population that can be found in UK publication AGR-130.
