4-H Summer Camps Provide Summer Learning Experiences

As school doors get ready to close for the summer, the learning opportunities continue for the thousands of youngsters who will include a 4-H camp experience as part of their upcoming summer vacation plans.

While some new twists have been added to camp activities, the basic goals of the 4-H camping experience still include lessons on appreciating the natural environment, making new friends and learning lifetime hobbies.

4-H summer camp offers opportunities for all youth ages 9-13 years to have a safe, educational, and fun filled experience away from the TV and video games.  4-H Teen Leaders, for youth ages 14-17 with prior 4-H camping experience, are also encouraged to attend.  Not only do 4-H Teen Leaders get all the fun from camping, but they also get experience in helping our younger youth throughout the week.

The camps are located near the communities of Carlisle, Rush, London, Jabez and Dawson Springs. They range in size from 300 to 1,500 acres and all have modern facilities including cabins, dining halls, swimming pools, and lakes for canoeing and fishing.

Today's 4-H camps incorporate a diverse set of learning experiences into their daily schedule and it varies from camp to camp.

4-H campers can learn new skills in traditional camp activities such as canoeing, nature, and archery.    Depending on the mix of volunteer leaders, a camp may also offer a variety of less traditional activities such as model rocketry, bird and reptile identification, soccer, drama training, and much more.  There is also an emphasis on citizenship, appreciating diversity and working effectively in a group.

Three camps have added a low-elements challenge course.  It is based on a series of obstacles in which the goal is to get an entire group of 4-Her's through to the objective together.

More than 3,000 volunteers help direct campers.  Each camp is also staffed with an emergency medical technician, certified lifeguards and instructors for nature and recreation.  Adult volunteers may serve as cabin counselor or can share their talents and skills by being a camp instructor or taking other leadership roles.

Butler County will camp at the West Kentucky 4-H Camp, located in Dawson Springs from July 13 – 17, 2015 and cost will be $199.00.  This includes transportation to and from the camp, three meals and two snacks a day and four nights of overnight lodging.

4-H Aerospace and Aviation Camp Set for June 3rd

Have you ever wanted to fly a plane? Now is the time to discover the thrill and magic of flight. This is the opportunity for middle & high school youth to experience the joy, thrill and magic of flight.  Learn the principles of flight, the basics of navigation, do some stargazing and learn how ancient mariners could tell their location on the earth by the stars. Learn about lift, thrust, gravity and drag.  Plan and conduct a flight. Log your first flight with a Certified Flight instructor.

As Leonard Ad Vance wrote…”Once you have tasted flight, you will forever walk the earth with your eyes turned skyward, for there you have been and there you long to return.”

A new and exciting curriculum has been adopted by 4-H.  As a part of introducing this new curriculum, we will be hosting a 4-H Aerospace/Aviation Camp at the Madisonville Airport.  Registration will start at 8:00 a.m. on Wednesday, June 3rd and end at 5:00 p.m. The middle and high school participants will learn about the history of Navigation, the Principles of Flight, weather and careers in aviation.  The 4-Hers will take to the air and under the direction of a certified flight instructor, and actually pilot an airplane.

The pilot project was partially funded by the Kentucky Agricultural Development Board through an endowment established with the Kentucky 4-H Foundation.

The cost of this program is $99.00 and includes camp fees, aircraft rental, and a T-shirt.
