Seed Library Sprouts at BC Library

The Butler County Public Library is encouraging local residents to garden with its seed library.

The seed library will allow people to select up to 6 free packets of seeds per growing season. The library will offer herb, vegetable and fruit seeds.   You may ask why they belong in the library?  Just as traditional libraries enrich a community by providing a way to share books, seed libraries enrich the gardening community by allowing gardeners to share. There are many parallels.  Seed libraries also support information sharing and preservation.

This year think about planting a row in your garden dedicated to someone who needs it or someone who is hungry.  Did you know that the Morgantown Mission, Morgantown Soup Kitchen and Morgantown Senior Center accepts fresh fruit and vegetable donations?

 OUR MISSION:

BCPL Seed Library is a free seed project committed to increasing the capacity of our community to feed itself wholesome food by means of education that fosters community resilience, self-reliance and a culture of sharing.

The Butler County Public Library’s Seed Library was created with the help from the BC Cooperative Extension Service. Butler County Library Director Kenna Martin said “The library staff and volunteers (Connie J. Embry, Susie Neal and Brenda Jenkins) has worked hard to get this program up and running.  I am really excited about our seed library; it is a new way to serve the community. We welcome new gardeners and experienced gardeners to come in and browse our selection.”
