Patty Craig: A Slice of Time

I’ve been watching my peonies come up, turn green, and develop buds. Hopefully, they will bloom soon. I have come to love those flowers! Over the years, I have transplanted them and added more. They remind me of past proms and of my children and grandchildren playing near them. Blooming peonies are also my personal sign that freezing temperatures are definitely coming to an end.

Thinking about peonies, I asked friends and family: “I associate blooming peonies with the end of freezing temperatures. Do you associate something with the transition to warm weather?” Their responses are listed below:

-Yes, blooming azaleas means that it’s spring allergy season. They have pretty flowers.

-Buttercups signal the promise of spring. Green grass, bugs, and the saying ‘hope springs eternal’ also come to mind.

-Porch sitting.

-Pollen – everything is covered in yellow and my allergies kick into high gear. Also, getting to turn off the HVAC and opening the windows – even though that doesn’t help my allergies, I love to have the fresh air.

-Longer days and late sunsets. Woohoo!

-I associate the transition to warm weather with the front door open and hearing the kids playing baseball or basketball in the yard until dark. And allergies.

-Frogs croaking. When you hear them, you know it won’t be long.

-I always think that warm weather is here when the azalea bushes and the dogwood trees are blooming. I love all the colors of spring’s new life!

-The reappearance of flying insects like mosquitos.

-Trees that bloom.

-Allergies: runny nose, watery eyes, and sneezing. Hello, spring!

-Peonies is one. But all the blooming colors and everything so green and alive.

-I know warmer weather is on the way when I start seeing buttercups and green grass.

-Turkeys gobbling.

-Buds on the trees, the daffodils blooming and fading out then tulips coming in, and my mood automatically improves.

-I associate the trees and grass getting green again with the transition.

-Sunlight becoming less yellow and more white as the season progresses.

Bernard Williams said, “The day the Lord created hope was probably the same day He created spring.” Spring is definitely making progress in my yard, and I’m happy to watch it happen. I also hope the peony blooms stick around for a few days.
