Patty Craig: A Slice of Time

Even avid snow lovers must be tired of our recent winter weather. I’ve had too much time to think about snow. But, some of the information I found was a bit entertaining.

Earlier in the month, nearly 80% of Kentucky had reached the first stage of drought conditions, and west of I-65, most of the land had been classified as experiencing moderate drought. How many inches of snow equals one inch of rain? The NOAA website stated that “on average, thirteen inches of snow equals one inch of rain in the US, although this ratio can vary from two inches for sleet to nearly fifty inches for very dry, powdery snow under certain conditions” (http://www.nssl.noaa.gov/education/svrwx101/winter/faq/). Hopefully, our drought conditions have vanished.

The Internet provided snow jokes and snow quotes, including the following (http://jokes4us.com/miscellaneousjokes/weatherjokes/snowjokes.html; http://www.brainyquote.com/quotes/keywords/snow_5.html):

•    Q: Where does a snowman keep his money?  A: In a snow bank.
•    Q: What do snowmen eat for breakfast?  A: Frosted Flakes.
•    Q: What do you call an old snowman?  A: Water!

•    I had forgotten how thrilling a snow day is until my son started school, and as much as he loves it, he swoons at the idea of a free day arriving unexpectedly, laid out like a gift. --Susan Orlean
•    It's nice to have money, but the first thing I did with money was buy my father a snow-blower, because my job was to shovel snow, and I wasn't there to do it anymore, so I was able to buy him a blower. --Richard Gere
•    Minneapolis has two seasons: Road Removal and Snow Repair. --Steven Brust

Snowy days usually keep many of us indoors. I asked a few friends what they did during the recent snowy days that they wouldn’t normally have done. Their answers are below:
•    Eating, eating, eating, eating, eating, and eating!
•    I’ve worked a puzzle, flipped my mattress, and watched too much television while eating too much junk food.
•    Definitely cooked more and baked more!
•    Got to have a snow day! For the first time in the history of our daycare, not one child showed up; so, we all got a snow day!
•    Cleaned out my daughter’s closets and organized clothes and toys to sell or donate, cleaned my baseboards, stayed in my pajamas and watched movies with my daughter. Wonderful!
•    Binge watched three seasons of Sons of Anarchy.
•    I did a lot of playing in the snow, sledding, and playing with my daughter. I cherish the days we get to stay home and play whatever she wants to play. I also took a nap everyday which was awesome!
•    Cook and eat, cook and eat. Did not get out from Sunday to Friday. Watched TV too much. Hope to get back to normal soon.
•    It has provided me the opportunity to pay attention to personal things such as cleaning out old files, closet cleaning, things I would not normally start when my time is limited.
•    One thing I accomplished during the snow is that I gained four pounds.

As I mentioned, I’ve had plenty of time to think about snow. I understand that it’s part of a Kentucky winter and brings needed moisture. I realize that spring doesn’t begin for about three weeks. But, I am totally ready to see buttercups, hyacinths, and tulips.
