Opportunities for Students

Butler County has some of the best and brightest, don’t pass up these opportunities! In collaboration with Western Kentucky University and the Center for Gifted Studies, we would like to make our parents and students aware of winter and summer opportunities.  These opportunities fill fast and summer truly is not that far away.  As you can see from the descriptions, the exciting and challenging opportunities are limitless!  If you would like further information on any of these programs please do not hesitate to contact Mrs. Vonda Jennings, Gifted Coordinator at Butler County Schools or Mrs. Leslie Wood, Gifted Instructor, Butler County Schools.

The Center for Gifted Studies will offer The Summer Camp for young learners for the first time this year!   Dates: Dates: July 15-19, 2013 Time: 9 a.m. - 2 p.m. (CDT) daily

The program is a day camp designed for high-ability or high-interest children who have been in grades one, two, three, and four during the 2012-2013 school year. The experience features hands-on and minds-on instruction to engage children in learning at advanced levels. Students will explore a wide range of subjects from math and science to art and theater during their day. Super Saturdays encourages students in grades 1 – 8 who are of high ability or have high interest in a topic to pursue their passions outside the regular classroom. Through a hands-on, minds-on approach to learning, students explore and investigate math, art, science, history, writing, music and performance under the thoughtful guidance of experienced teachers and in the company of enthusiastic, like-minded peers.

Choosing from more than 40 classes, students take one class over the course of four Saturdays. Each session is two-and-a-half hours in length.

 2013 Travel in France – Eighth grade and high school honors students will explore the history, pageantry, and culture of France during this travel/study tour.  Sites in and outside of Paris will be visited and interested adults are welcome.  Dates:  May 27 - June 5, 2013 Program Cost $3,500 Application Information Applications are accepted on a first-come basis and must come with a passport-sized photograph and non-refundable $300 deposit. http://www.wku.edu/gifted/travel.php

SCATS(Summer Camp for Academically Talented Middle School Students)  Dates: June 9 - 21, 2013 Requirements:

    Students must be completing 6th - 8th grade this year.
    Students must be nominated by a teacher, counselor, or principal.
    Students must show high interest/achievement in one or more content areas. (Please see full application for more details.)   Tuition for residential SCATS campers is $1,800.   Tuition for non-residential SCATS campers is $900.

SCATS is a two week residential or non-residential camp that provides a wide range of classes for academically talented students.  For a course listing go online:  http://www.wku.edu/gifted/scats.php

    Summer Program for Verbally and Mathematically Precocious Youth(VAMPY)  Dates: June 23 - July 13  Requirements:
    Students must be completing 7th - 10th grade this year.
    Students must have an ACT or SAT score that qualifies them for their chosen VAMPY course. (Please refer to the 2013 application to find these scores.) A photocopy of the applicant's ACT or SAT report is required with application.
    All campers must live on campus during VAMPY.
