Morgantown Elementary 2016-2017

Principal Chad Flener

It is with great excitement that I welcome all of our students, faculty, and staff back to Morgantown Elementary School. We are a school of enthusiastic learners and a dedicated, experienced faculty and staff. I anticipate this to be one of the greatest years in the history of our school. Our motto for this past year coincided with the implementation of Leader in Me, it was LIVE, LOVE, LEARN, and LEAVE a LEGACY.  Every morning our students heard those words during morning announcements and often throughout the day.  We made every effort to offer opportunities to offer our students the opportunities to practice and implement our motto and that same theme has continued to drive our planning and preparation for the upcoming school year.
Last year Morgantown Elementary became the first school in Butler County to be a Leader in Me school.  Our teachers and staff worked hard to implement the 7 Habits within our classrooms and across the school.  We spent time teaching the 7 Habits along with our regular content, but more importantly, we gave our students the opportunity to practice what they had learned and put the 7 Habits into motion.  Words cannot express the personal growth we witnessed within our student body.  We saw students who were shy and reserved, stand in front of a roomful of total strangers and tell them about our school and what goes on here.  We’ve also witnessed students using the 7 Habits in their personal lives at school and at home.  This year, we continue with year 2 of our implementation of Leader In Me and the 7 Habits by focusing on goal-setting phase of Leader in Me.  Students, teachers, and staff, will begin the year by self-reflecting and setting personal and school-wide goals.
As demands and complexities of teaching children increase, it becomes more evident that we all need to work together to insure that our children reach their potential.  We believe that all of us – the school, the family, and the community – must work together in an extended family-like environment to insure success for all our students.  We believe it is everyone’s responsibility to empower children with the creative, intellectual, and decision-making skills necessary for them to become academically, socially, physically, and emotionally successful and responsible LEADERS at Morgantown Elementary and in our community.
With that in mind, you are invited to be an active participant at Morgantown Elementary School.  Whether you are a classroom volunteer, a member of the PTO, special event participant, community volunteer, or member of one of our school committees, you are encouraged to be involved!  Research on schools clearly demonstrates that parent participation in their child’s school has a huge impact on their child with a greater likelihood of academic success.  If you would like to be more involved, we want to encourage you to contact our Volunteer Coordinator, Mrs. Jan Embry at Morgantown Elementary.  Jan will get you plugged-in somewhere in our school that matches your individual talents and school needs.
It is our desire to keep you informed of all that is taking place at school.  We have set-up numerous ways that you can keep up-to-date on the happenings at Morgantown Elementary.  Information on events will be sent to you though the weekly newsletters, which you should receive weekly in your child’s Monday Message Folder and will appear on our school web page at www.mespatriots.com as well as posted on our Facebook page @morgantownelementary.  This year we are adding a new form of communication; REMIND, a text alert system. If you would like to receive messages via text, all you have to do is text @4b7667 to 81010 and you will begin to receive text alerts on your phone about what’s going on at Morgantown Elementary.  Or if you need additional information and have questions or concerns that arise at any time, you can always call the school.  Our friendly front office staff is more than willing to help you in any way possible.

Much time and preparation have gone into getting ready for the new school year.  A lot of the preparation during the summer revolves around cleaning the school from top to bottom.  We want to say a big Thank You to our custodial staff; Mr. Carlton, Mr. Steven, and Ms. Judy, along with others that have worked tirelessly day in and day out this summer to get our building in tip top shape for the first day of school.

As we enter the new school year, I think back to last year and remember some of the trying and difficult events that took place.  But within moments, I allow the more joyful, exciting, unforgettable events to take over my memory and I begin to smile.  I become full of excitement about the new school year and how within just a few weeks this building will be filled once again with students, faculty, and staff who are all LIVING, LOVING, LEARNING, and LEAVING A LEGACY.

Sincerely,

J. Chad Flener
