MES host Arts, Humanities, and Practical Living Family Fun Night

 Students singing 7 Habits song

On Tuesday night, September 27th, Morgantown Elementary School hosted their Arts, Humanities, and Practical Living Family Fun Night. The purpose of this event was to give families the opportunity to meet with their child's teachers and learn what they are being taught throughout the year.  These classes are called “specials”.  The term "specials" is used in reference to the art, library, counseling, music, and physical education classes that MES offers.

Greeting families and signing them up for the event was Ms. Kelsey Allen and Mrs. Jan Embry. The evening began with dinner for the students in the cafeteria and the singing of the 7 Habits song.  Serving dinner was Leann Hudnall, Tyler Waddell, and Taylor Hill.

Once dismissed after dinner all grades K-5th grade were sent to different areas of the school with their families to participate in activities for each of the specials classes.  Each special’s class had an event planned for the evening and was attended on a rotation by each participating grade.

During the art session, Mr. Lin taught students how to properly use chopsticks. Using Cheerios on plates, Mr. Lin taught his students how to eat with these utensils.

Library was instructed by Ms. Morris, and helping Mr. Himes with music was Ms. Hayes. In both of these sessions, students and their families played themed bingo games and prizes were given away.

Mrs. Tyree and Mrs. Reed discussed ways families could stay close in a world full of distractions. One suggestion that was highlighted in their discussion was family meal night.  Mrs. Tyree stressed the importance of powering down electronic devices at meal time to encourage families to speak with each other and discuss their day.  By taking the time to perform this simple task, it gives families the opportunity to reconnect and be more involved in each other’s lives.

Discussing exercise and healthy eating habits was Mr. Gray.  He explained the exercises performed by the students in his class and recommendations for them on how to exercise and eat healthy at home. At this time Kaitlin Harrison also gave samples of smoothies from the new machine MES acquired via grant money.

MES would like to thank the students and families for their participation in the family fun night. They look forward to seeing everyone again and appreciate each individual's time and volunteer efforts.
