MES Day Camp A Huge Success

Morgantown Elementary held its annual summer school program the week of May 29 – June 2.  This year’s “Day Camp” was held from 7:30 A.M. to 4:30 P.M. each day, Tuesday through Friday.  Participating students were in for an exciting week!  Each day started with breakfast, the Pledge of Allegiance and the MES Leader in Me pledge.  Students had three classes every morning with an emphasis on reading and literacy skills before coming together for a morning assembly program.

Tuesday’s speaker was Mr. Lloyd Saylor from the UK Extension Office who presented a program on flight and aviation.  Students created their own air powered “straw rockets,” competing to determine whose could fly the farthest.  Wednesday, students had the opportunity to continue learning about movement, gravity, and speed by creating marble ramps with retired science teacher, Mr. Ronnie Tyree.  After modifying their ramps, groups competed on which ramp slowed the marble down the most while still being able to move freely along the ramp.

On Thursday, Mrs. Kaitlin Harrison, the Director of Food Services for Butler County Schools presented a lesson on nutrition and on Friday, Mrs. Tracy Thornton Cowles demonstrated how liquids turn to solid by having the students make their own homemade ice cream.  After lunch each day, students had three more classes, before having an afternoon speaker or field trip.  Tuesday, students walked to the Butler County Public Library where Ms. Kenna and Ms. Kathy taught them how to use their new library card to check out books of interest and invited them to participate in the summer reading program.  On Wednesday, Darrell McKee and Amber Smith from Morgantown Bank and Trust talked to the students about saving money and explained how a bank works.

Thursday, Ashley Reynolds and Annabelle Cooper demonstrated yoga for students, and on Friday, the group was rewarded for their hard work by taking a trip to the Sno Shack!

MES Day Camp teachers were Mrs. Kim Grubb, Mr. Dennis McCrocklin, and Miss Kristen Hughson, with para-educators, Mr. Steven McLean, Mrs. Tonya Farris, and Ms. Katy Havens.  Program Coordinator was Mrs. Linda Tyree.

The MES Day Camp is a part of the Extended School Services program offered by the Butler County School District.

A special thanks goes to Monticello Baptist Church who provided Tuesday’s breakfast, Mrs. Melissa Glass, the director of the Family Resource Center who provided meals and snacks for the students, and Mrs. Kaitlin Harrison and Mrs. Rachael Cameron who provided meals through the summer feeding program.

The 2017 MES Day Camp was a huge success for all those involved!  Thanks to all our presenters and those who made this program possible for our students!!
