A Letter of Thankfulness: By Garey Hughes

(For those of you who are unaware, my husband, Garey, took a bad fall on December 10th.  He was airlifted to Skyline Trauma Center in Nashville.  He was so touched by the outpouring of help and concern by the community that he wanted to voice his appreciation. Cheryl Hughes)

I am not the writer in this family, but I have to express my heartfelt gratitude to this community for the outpouring of prayers and support shown to me and my family since my accident.  Most people never know how much they are thought of and cared for until they are no longer breathing.  I have been blessed to see this while still in the land of the living.  I have been overwhelmed by the love and kindness that we have been shown, and I want to say thank you.

Thank you to all those who prayed and to those who were here for Cheryl when I couldn’t be.  Thank you to the neighbors who cleaned up the blood from our kitchen floor.  Thanks to the friend who drove Cheryl to Skyline, and a few days later, spent the night with me so Cheryl could have a break.  Thank you to all those who brought food and had food delivered, and to those who called and dropped by to check on us.  Thank you to our wonderful little cat sitter who kept Cheryl from worrying about her little babies.  Thank you to the guy who cleaned the blood out of my truck and wouldn’t charge me a penny.

I would especially like to thank the Butler County EMTs for their timely response and care.  Thanks to all those who give blood, the lifegiving fluid that did just that.  Thanks to the Medivac team and to my wife for convincing me that we needed life-flight insurance a few years ago.  (It can not only save your life, but your life savings, as well.)

Lastly, I want to thank my wife and family for the utmost support and care, doing all the things I can’t right now.  My daughter, Natalie, and her husband, Scott, and my daughter, Nikki, ran themselves ragged, so Cheryl could stay by my side.

This community is filled with good people, and I love good people. (There are a few bad ones too, but they are not so bad that they can’t be tolerated.)  Seriously, this has been the most blessed holiday season I have ever experienced, and I hope the level of joy and blessing that has been bestowed on me will be bestowed upon each and everyone of you this holiday season and in the years to come.

Thanks again,

Garey Hughes
