Gilstrap Pie Supper

Several came out on Saturday afternoon, September 3rd, for the annual Gilstrap Community Pie Supper. The night offered fun to everyone of all ages including an auction, cake walk, raffles, games, music, prizes, and great food.

President of the Gilstrap Community Center, Ellen Miller, advised they had gotten the dates wrong for how long the pie supper has been in existence after having their new sign made with the date of establishment. The first community meeting was held in 1971 which is referenced on their sign beside the center.  The first pie supper was in 1973, making this year the 45th annual pie supper.

The crowd grew from the previous year as several came out to enjoy the fun and fellowship while supporting their community.  The main attraction each year has always been the cake walk. For several years Shirley Allen has been a pivotal part of the pie supper as the emcee of the cake walk. In honor of her, a sign beside the cake table read, "Shirley's Cake Walk."

Band director, Jason Ausbrooks and his wife Anita volunteered this year to help with the games such as the dart throw and the dunking booth. Mr. Ausbrooks was the target this year in the booth, and several of his students arrived to buy chances to dunk him.  Tara Mason and Jarrod Evans also helped with the other games available which were the ring toss and the duck pond for the younger children.

Other than the games, several people were able to bid in the silent auction, participate in raffles, and buy items from the "country store table".  Music for the evening was provided by Woody Allen and the Blue Star Wranglers.  Not only was Woody a part of the entertainment for the night, but he was also the auctioneer for the several items that were donated for bidding.

All proceeds from the event went to benefit the Gilstrap Community Center. Items such as new picnic tables and the upkeep of the property are able to be paid for from this yearly event. Everyone's time and attendance are greatly appreciated.  The community of Gilstrap looks forward to seeing everyone again next year.
