Flag Day Celebrated by Butler County Chapter NSDAR

The Butler County Chapter NSDAR held a program on the Courthouse lawn on Wednesday, June 14 in observance of Flag Day. Efforts began as early as 1916 to get Flag Day national observance. Finally, in 1949 President Harry S. Truman signed a Congress-approved Flag Day into law.
"It is our custom to observe June 14 each year with ceremonies designed not only to commemorate the birth of our flag but also to rededicate ourselves to the ideals for which it stands," Truman said in his proclamation. "This beloved emblem, which flies above all our people of whatever creed or race, signalizes our respect for human rights and the protection such rights are afforded under our form of government."
After a welcome by Chapter Regent Georgia Lavern Romans, the program included an invocation offered by Janeen Taylor. The pledge was then led by Lynda O’Driscoll, chapter flag chair who also presented a flag fact as is customary in chapter meetings.

The speaker for the event was John Burden, Butler County High School History teacher, who spoke of a wartime event involving the American Flag.

A flute solo was performed by Tobin Maxfield.

Mrs. O’Driscoll presented a certificate to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints for proper care and display of the flag.

Regent Romans also recognized Chapter Registrar with a certificate from NSDAR for her work in helping to organize the General Butler SAR Chapter.
In closing, Ms. Romans encouraged all present to remember the Commemoration of the 100th anniversary of the United States involvement in WW I during 2017-2018.
