Family Resource Center + Butler County Young Farmers = Student Gardens

In May the Butler County Family Resource Center and the Butler County Young Farmers began planning the gardens for both elementary schools.  Over the summer they have maintained a potato crop and built and planted 12 raised beds.  Each school has six plant beds, which were recently planted by North Butler Elementary and Morgantown Elementary families.

"We want the students to see the connection between planting the seeds and what they eat," said Lance Lockhart of the Butler County Young Farmers.
A leadership team will be formed at each school to take care of the gardens.  The leadership teams are part of the Leader in Me program at the schools.  At harvest time the garden families and students will share a meal prepared from the school gardens.

"This program has worked well in other school districts and has actually supplied from for school lunches," added Lockhart.

The Butler County Young Farmers funded this project from a Monstanto Grant which Brandon Givens received.
