ELA Family Night A Success at MES

On Thursday, September 8th, Morgantown Elementary hosted an ELA Family Night for the Butler County School District. ELA stands for english language acquisition and is a program for students that are learning english as a second language. The ELA population continues to grow for the school district as efforts are made to provide services to meet their needs.

There were 108 in attendance at the event that was sponsored by Morgantown Elementary and the Butler County Family Resource Center. A meal was provided and fun activities were scheduled for the children that attended. Mrs. Delia Burns, MES ELA teacher, and Mrs. Kara McKinney, BCHS ELA teacher, were able to meet with the parents to discuss the student’s progress learning the language and scores from recent tests that the students had taken.

Katie Wilson, MES 5th grade teacher, stated, “The ELA Family night was great. It was great seeing the district come together and be a part of such a fantastic event.”

Delia Burns, MES ELA teacher, added, “The Butler County School District came together and pulled off a great ELA Family Night. We had thirty families attend with a total of 108 participants. We would like to thank the Butler County Family Recourse and Youth Services for the food and door prizes. A big thanks to the Butler County Extension office (Tracy Thorton) for the awesome gifts for each family. As each year passes, each ELA student makes an outstanding increase in the english language. We recognized six students for entering the monitoring stage-Yoni Mendoza-Alonzo, Stacy Gomez-Martinez, Juana Rafael-Vargas, Rosa Alonzo-Lucas, Yesenia Diaz-Cedillo, and Marcos Mendoza-Alonzo. I am blessed to work in a district that welcomes all people! –Delia Burns
