Court approves Cost of Living Adjustments, considers replacing cupola

Carl Overton, Senior Auditor for Telcom Audit Group
The Butler County Fiscal Court met in regular session on Monday, July 9, at the Butler County Courthouse.  All magistrates: Stevie Givens, Johnny Tuck, Chad Tyree, David Whittinghill and Bobby Moore were in attendance.
Old Business:
The court approved a bid from Lawrence Concrete for the replacement of the concrete steps outside the courthouse.  The motion was approved by a 5-0 vote.
Next, the court approved Consolidated Pipe as the first choice for plastic tile for the Butler County Road Department.  Drake's Farm Service was approved as the second choice. The motion passed by a 4-1 vote with Johnny Tuck, second district magistrate voting nay.

New Business:
The court approved the following cost of living raise for county employees
  • Full-time employees- $1 per hour
  • Part-time employees- 50 cents per hour
  • Salary employees- 2 percent raise
The motion passed by a 4-1 vote with Chad Tyree, third district magistrate, casting the lone nay vote.  Tyree stated that he thought of the magistrate job more of a service position, and did not agree with the raise.
The court approved a raise for the Occupational Tax Officer to bring the salary in-line with the treasurer and judge's secretary.

Magistrates discussed the quote for recladding the existing cupola in the amount of $40,959.  According to Judge David Fields the cupola was removed from the courthouse several years ago because of leaks in the roof.  The cupola has a clock on each side and plays music on the hour.  If replacement is approved additional cost would include the rental of a crane and possible structural reinforcement.  No action was taken by the court.

Carl Overton, Senior Auditor for Telecom Audit Group gave a presentation to the court.  The company would audit the phone bills and any utility accounts selected by the court to identify and cut wasteful spending. They specialize in reviewing Government, Healthcare and Non-Profits Voice and Data costs. The company is paid only if they find savings. No action was taken by the court.

In other action the court approved the following:
  • Reappointment of Brenda Jenkins to the Butler County Public Library Board of Trustees.
  • Hiring a part-time employee for the Butler County Animal Shelter at $9.69 per hour
  • Provider fuel agreement with Key Oil for Rochester Ferry
