Bears to face Grayson County in district tournament

WHITESVILLE - Boys' high school basketball teams throughout the state have been busy preparing for the postseason. Locally, Butler County is poised to take the floor in the opening round of the 12th District Boys' Basketball Tournament. Butler County is set to face Grayson County in the opening round of the 12th District Boys' Basketball Tournament at 7:30 p.m. at Whitesville Trinity High School on Tuesday. The Bears exited the regular-season on a two-game winning streak following back-to-back victories over Frederick Fraize and Hancock County. 

Will Moore led Butler County throughout its 24-game regular-season. Moore averaged 21.7 points per game for the Bears. Currently, Butler County features three players averaging double figures in the scoring column. Both Brennan Grubb and Caleb Beasley are averaging 12 points per game for the Bears. Jaden Hurt, who is averaging 7.5 points per game, leads Butler County inside. Hurt is averaging a team-high 6.5 rebounds per game. 

As a team, Butler County is shooting 40.4 percent from the field, 33.3 percent beyond the arc and 67.9 percent at the free throw line. 

The Bears, under the direction of head coach Calvin Dockery, concluded the 2017-18 season 11-13 overall and 2-4 in the 12th District. Butler County dropped a pair of district games to Grayson County during the regular-season. The Bears swept Edmonson County for their two district wins. 

The Cougars, under the tutelage of head coach Travis Johnston, exited the regular-season with an 11-16 overall record and a 4-2 district mark. Grayson County swept Butler County and Edmonson County during a pair of district series during the regular-season.

Bailey Logsdon is leading the way for the Cougars. Logsdon is averaging 12.7 points and 5.1 rebounds per game. He is the only Grayson County player averaging double figures in the scoring column. 

Grayson County prevailed in its regular-season finale after suffering three straight losses. As a team, Grayson County is shooting 40.1 percent from the field, 32.5 percent beyond the arc and 63.1 percent at the free throw line. 

Butler County and Grayson County will meet in the nightcap of the 12th District Boys' Basketball Tournament on Tuesday night. Host Edmonson County is slated to face Whitesville Trinity in the opening game of the district boys' basketball tournament earlier in the evening at 6 p.m.

The winners of the Edmonson County-Whitesville Trinity and Butler County-Grayson County matchups will meet in the 12th District championship game at 7 p.m. on Friday. 

Both the champion and runner-up from the 12th District will advance to the Third Region Boys' Basketball Tournament.
