BCHS students get taste of professional future during career day

Carol Phebus, Assistant Director, West AHEC at Baptist Health Madisonville, speaks to BCHS students Thursday about potential careers in health care.

Butler County High School students got a taste of what may lay ahead in their future during Thursday morning’s BCHS Career Day Event.

Coordinator of Youth Services Karla Coles said the event is essential to encourage high school students to think about their career path once they leave BCHS.

“It gives kids specific career information related to their interests, things they wouldn’t know otherwise,” Coles said.

Coles said by interacting and getting firsthand information from actual professionals students get a clearer picture of a potential career path.

"It lets them know what they would be doing on a day-to-day basis. Like with photography, what do you really do? They get the real expectations. They give them the educational requirements. They give them insight into things that they may not realize careers entail."

Photographer and Butler County native Mike Ingram spoke to a class of students interested in learning more about the art form. Ingram told students he pursued photography at 29 and was completely self-taught.

“I learned more from trial and error,” Ingram said. “I mostly shoot people--portraits and landscapes are my specialty.”

Carol Phebus, Assistant Director, West AHEC at Baptist Health Madisonville, spoke to BCHS students Thursday about potential careers in health care. Phebus told high school students who are passionate about careers in health care can take steps while in high school to have their career path actualized. Phebus told a room full of students in the auditorium about summer programs offered at UK, U of L and in Pikeville. Because Butler County is an underserved medical many students have a higher change of getting accepted into such programs, Phebus said.
