B.C. Arts Guild: Celebration of Lights & Sounds
The Christmas spirit was alive and well in Morgantown on Saturday evening as many in the community rallied around the mural for the Butler County Arts Guild Celebration of Lights and Sounds.
Boyce Flener, a retired music educator and accomplished vocalist himself, served as emcee of the event and welcomed those in attendance. Flener spoke about the importance of the Arts Guild and encouraged those with an interest in the arts to support the group with their time, talents, and brains.
The night was kicked off with performances by young dancers from The Dance Academy, which is owned by Moira Givens Taylor. Also performing were the Butler County High School Band and the Butler County High School Choir. Band Director Jason Ausbrooks was present but Katy Nash, who has been working as a band assistant for the past few months, was directing the performance. Choir Director Travis Lowe was leading his group as they performed. Both groups performed a variety of Christmas music.
Mid-way through the event, the official lighting of the multiple Christmas trees and other assorted lights took place, which provided an appropriate holiday backdrop for the festivities.
Local artist Gail Smrtic, who was responsible for the holiday-themed wraps that covered the mural, spoke about the project. She provided a brief description of each panel, which ends with the North Pole. Smrtic said selected scenes on each panel were deliberately placed lower and geared toward children, which makes them more accessible for family photos.
"I love Morgantown, thank you and I love you all," said Smrtic.
Flener wrapped the evening in true holiday spirit.
"Merry Christmas to all and thanks for coming," said Flener. "May God bless you."
B.C.A.G. President Josh Hampton described the event as a huge success.
"The weather cooperated and the music and other performances were great," said Hampton. "This was a wonderful event for our community and the Arts Guild is glad to be a part of it. Hopefully, it's something we can build on each year. I really appreciate all the folks who came out to support this project," added Hampton.
