Andy Sullivan: Against The Grain

“Speak now or forever hold your peace”. That refrain is a constant towards the end of wedding ceremonies.  It really holds true for everything in life.  How did the couple get to the altar in the first place? They spoke up when the time came.  They spoke up, started that first conversation that led to that first call, which in turn led to that first date and so on.
How did you get that job? You spoke up when the time was right.  You decided what you wanted and you went for it.  As a result, you have a job.  As a result of the confidence that you mustered up when you saw that special person, you are now at the point where you dreamed of at that first glance.
Whether it be a possible partner or a possible boss, you need that confidence.  You’ve got to have that confidence.  It’s not easy.  That’s why it’s so hard to achieve.  My advice is to go for it.  Graduates, you need to go for it.  I’m sure this message has been told to you time and again. There’s a reason for that.  It’s a very true statement.
“Speak now or forever hold your peace”.  How did David Letterman, who (considering this is posted on Thursday or Friday) just retired from his show, get his first job on tv-a morning show? He had the confidence to go for it.
You have to build your courage up.  I’ll tell any graduate reading this exactly what I told my best friend as she recently started her new job.  Get plenty of rest the night before.  Before you leave for an interview or job, look in a mirror and say to yourself “I can do this”.  Finally, go forth and be awesome! And when you’re asked why you want the job, speak now or forever hold your peace.  Good luck!
