Andy Sullivan: Against The Grain

Wednesday night, I had the opportunity to see the legendary Don Williams perform at the SKYPAC.  The 2010 inductee into the Country Music Hall of Fame put on a great show; and all he did was sit in a chair and play and sing.  That’s all he needed to do.  Sure, he may have fudged on a few lines or forgotten some lyrics, but the sold out crowd didn’t mind at all.  In fact, we helped him out by singing along to just about every song!
Before Don, there was an opening act.  Irishman country singer Colm Kirwan sang songs from his self-titled release.  One thing you’ll notice quickly: when Colm starts singing, you won’t detect an Irish accent, only when he speaks.  I was lucky enough to meet Colm after the show and get my cd signed as well as a pic of us on my iPhone.  You’ll recognize at least one song on his album.  He covers the John Michael Montgomery hit “I Love the Way You Love Me” with the songwriter Victoria Shaw as his duet partner.  Before moving back to Don, I must mention his outstanding a capella version of “Danny Boy”.  Hear and learn more at www.ColmKirwanMusic.com
Don took the stage shortly thereafter.   His set was filled with the classics from “Some Broken Hearts Never Mend”, “Your My Best Friend”, “I Believe In You”, “Amanda” (a song that I knew as sung by Waylon Jennings), “(Turn Out The Lights) And Love Me Tonight” and more.  He opened his set with “Good Ole Boys Like Me”.  I was a little surprised he opened with a classic.  Then again, when you have as many hits as he’s had, that’s probably not as uncommon as one might think.
The whole time, there were repeated requests from the packed audience for his hit “Tulsa Time”, to which he replied “We’ll get there”.  They did, of course.  There were some pretty funny moments in the show.  One of which occurred after a couple of songs.  Don said “I don’t talk very much.  That’s all I’ve got to say about that”.  That elicited laughs and applause from the audience.
For a guy who grew up (begrudgingly or not) listening to Don Williams-Dad is a huge fan-I was really impressed with the show.  Definitely a night to remember!
