Aces come to town for Bears' district opener

Owensboro Catholic Aces

Two teams quite familiar with each other will take to the field Friday night, September 26, in Morgantown for a key Class 2A, District 2 football contest.  This week marks the beginning of the district season for Butler County.

The Bears (2-2) will face off against the Owensboro Catholic Aces (4-1).  Butler County is coming off a tough 54-24 loss at Grayson County last week, while Catholic handed district foe Hancock County a 60-14 thumping.  Kickoff between Butler and Catholic is set for 7 p.m.

B.C.H.S. Coach Ryan Emmick and his team fully understand the challenges Owensboro Catholic brings to the table.

"Catholic is a great team and they are ranked #5 in 2A," said Emmick,  "and they are very deserving of that ranking."

Coach Emmick expects a sustained air attach from the Aces.

"Ray Zuberer is one of the leading passers in 2A and in the state.  They like to throw the ball around, averaging around 40+ pass attempts each game," said Emmick.

Zuberer will have two targets to hit that will be the focus of Butler County's secondary coverage.

"Shamari Morton #3 is a speed burner.  He transferred in from Owensboro Senior and has speed to burn.  He is a weapon at receiver and in the kicking game.  We have to be aware of him at all times," said Emmick.  "Jansen Riney #2 is also another good receiver for Owensboro Catholic.  He is dynamic in the receiving game and makes plays and gets himself open," added Emmick.

Butler County's defense will likely see multiple offensive sets and formations from the Aces.

"Offensively, Owensboro Catholic will use many different spread sets to get their receivers the ball.  They do a great job spreading the ball around.  Catholic throws the ball early and often and we have to be sound in our coverages to compete in this game," said Emmick.

Defensively, Catholic uses a combination of a 3-5-3 and 4-4 showing both Cover 1 and Cover 2 defensive backfields.

"We must be more balanced in our offensive attack in order to have success offensively," said Emmick.

Kickoff is at 7 p.m.  The game will be aired live on the "New Q" 101.5 FM with John Embry and Cody Donaldson.
