School Board Recognizes Karen Evans

Karen Evans and Scott Howard

The Butler County Board of Education met in regular session on Tuesday, at the Butler County Education Complex.  Board members Delbert Johnson, Debbie Hammers and Amy Hood were in attendance.
The board recognized former board member Karen Evans for her service to the district.  Evans served on the board since 2007, and resigned this year after he son took a teaching position in the district.  Due to regulations board members cannot have an immediate relative employed by the board. Evans served as chairman of the board.

"We want to thank Karen for her service to the district, we are going to miss her, she did a great job," said Superintendent Scott Howard.
“I enjoyed my time on the board; this is a very good board and district.  They always put the students first,” said Evans.
After approving the minutes of the July 14th meeting, Eric Elms gave the treasurer’s report: Beginning balance; $1,448,309.68, Expenditures; $1,244,022.26, Receipts; $1,382,704.48, and Ending balance of $1,586,991.90.
Total enrollment for the district is down from this date last year according to Howard.
“On the third day of school last year we had 2164 students, this year’s total is 2137,” said Howard.
A breakdown of the numbers:
                 2014          2015
BCHS       626            639
BCMS       473            488
MES          686            651
NBES        336            337

Kaitlin Harrison gave the School Nutrition Report.  According to Harrison more students are eating lunch and breakfast at school.  Comparing number from last year to this year Harrison was well pleased with the increase.
“In order to keep the free lunch and breakfast program in the schools there needs to be at least a 90 percent participation rate. So far MES has had a 97 percent rate and BCMS and NBES have had a 96 percent rate,” said Harrison.

Superintendent Scott Howard reported to the board concerning recent meeting and events he had attended on behalf of the district including: United Way presentation, Adult Education graduation, Infant-Toddler Institute, leadership retreat, Chinese Tour, Out on a Limb on WLBQ 101.5, and the Leader In Me Initiative.

“We are very excited about the Leader In Me, which is starting this year at Morgantown Elementary and next year at North Butler Elementary.  The community is a vital part of this program as well,” said Howard.
Instructional Supervisors Robert Tuck and Donna Annis reported on events, programs, and activities at each of the individual schools in the district.

Tammy Parker, representing the Butler County Baseball Boosters, asked for the board’s approval to erect an outfield metal fence at the baseball field.
“The money has been donated and the boosters are going to do the work, there will be no cost to the district, said Clark.
The board approved the project.
