Patty Craig: A Slice of Time

I recently overheard a discussion about how Christmas is no longer treated as a sacred day or as respectfully as it once was. As the discussion progressed, I silently agreed with much that was said. Our attitudes toward Christmas have changed.

The following quotes reveal some people’s thoughts about Christmas (http://www.brainyquote.com/quotes/topics/topic_christmas.html#YwvzFtLRt8...):
•    He who has not Christmas in his heart will never find it under a tree. --Roy L. Smith
•    It's true, Christmas can feel like a lot of work, particularly for mothers. But when you look back on all the Christmases in your life, you'll find you've created family traditions and lasting memories. Those memories, good and bad, are really what help to keep a family together over the long haul. --Caroline Kennedy
•    Christmas is the day that holds all time together. --Alexander Smith
•    The excellence of a gift lies in its appropriateness rather than in its value. --Charles Dudley Warner
•    At Christmas play and make good cheer, for Christmas comes but once a year. --Thomas Tusser
•    Once again, we come to the Holiday Season, a deeply religious time that each of us observes, in his own way, by going to the mall of his choice. --Dave Barry
•    Santa Claus has the right idea - visit people only once a year. --Victor Borge
•    Christmas is, of course, the time to be home - in heart as well as body. --Garry Moore
•    There are a lot of Grinches out there that would like nothing better than to take any references to religion out of the holiday season. --Ernest Istook
•    My mother-in-law has come round to our house at Christmas seven years running. This year we're having a change. We're going to let her in. --Les Dawson

Many nations around the world celebrate Christmas. On this day, we remember the birth of Jesus. Matthew 1-2 and Luke 2 provide details of His birth (Personally, I like Luke’s version.). Like many in our region, my family traditionally celebrates through family time, food, and gifts.

Billy Graham said, “I think we've taken the meaning of Christmas out. People don't stop and think about Jesus or the birth of Jesus. When they think of Christmas, they think of Santa Claus and - for the children, and they think of giving gifts and out-giving the next person, of spending their time looking for the right thing for somebody who has everything” (http://www.brainyquote.com/quotes/topics/topic_christmas.html#YwvzFtLRt8...). Perhaps in recent years our rituals have been given too much attention. In Matthew 28:20b Jesus said, “…I am with you always, to the very end of the age” (NIV). I am thankful for this. Since we’ll soon celebrate Jesus’ birth, I wish you a merry – and sacred – Christmas.
