Patty Craig: A Slice of Time

This summer, I’ve noticed that some of the foods that family members disliked in the past are now on their ok-to-eat lists. Many of my preferences have altered over time as well. These changes show that human preference can vary over time.

People tend to talk about their likes or dislikes. A few of those comments are listed below (http://www.brainyquote.com/quotes/keywords/dislike_3.html#374Hue3zpPRVf8...):
•    There's always going to be somebody who takes a dislike to you, and you can't waste time worrying about it. -Paula Radcliffe
•    Electronic devices dislike me. There is never a day when something isn't ailing. -Dick Cavett
•    Whenever we approve, we can find a hundred good reasons to justify our approbation. Whenever we dislike, we can find a thousand to justify our dislike. -Samuel Richardson

Since likes and dislikes change over time, I asked friends and family to share something that they used to like or dislike but now don’t. Their responses are below:
•    Mother’s Day.
•    One thing I used to really like was “going.” I used to like to go all the time: weekend trips, dinner at friends’ houses, town…wherever. But now, I’m a little older and a lot more settled. I still like to travel to places I’ve never been, but I don’t like “going” all the time anymore. My life is most at peace – and most complete – when I am at home on my own back porch, surrounded by family and friends.
•    I don’t like spaghetti anymore. I like peppers now and didn’t before.
•    When I was young, I never ate sweets. Now I love them. I used to dislike kids, and now I love them. I used to like men, and now I don’t. When I was young, I didn’t see how I could stand to lose my brother. Now that I’m older, I know that I had no choice but to let him go. When I was young, I ran and did as fast as I could. Now, that I’m older, I stand really still at times and take it all in, and I’m thankful for having more than I deserve.
•    Certain types of shoes. Shoe likes and dislikes change with age.
•     I used to like hot days, now I dislike them. I also dislike high heels. And, getting up early is no longer fun.
•    I used to like pop music and staying up late, but now I dislike them.
•    I now like the color green…and gualmolar Mexican. Strange, I like them now, and they’re both green.
•    I used to like summer best, but now I like fall. I used to hate coffee, and now I am starting to like it (Thanks, nursing program!).
•    I used to like, but don’t any more: big parties, swimming, water parks, riding rides, staying up all night, risking my life or getting hurt (taking chances in general) just to see if I could do something. The bad thing is only older people can afford things that young people can enjoy! I used to hate, but now like: naps and going slow.
•    I used to like but don’t: loud concerts where you have to stand the whole time. Like now but didn’t used to like: news radio, documentaries, and saving money.
•    Used to dislike, but now like: pickles on my burger, mushrooms on pizza, banana peppers on pizza and sandwiches, sweet relish on hot dogs, coffee, and running for exercise. Used to like, but now dislike: most currently popular music (I like the music I grew up with better.), sleeping all day, and working long hours trying to get ahead.
•    I used to like mixed drinks, but I dislike them now.
•    Sushi. First time I had sushi, it was at a Chinese buffet. As you can imagine, it smelled like a nursing home and tasted like dodo. A friend of mine insisted I try some from a real sushi place. Phenomenal. I can’t get enough of it now.
•    I used to LOVE black licorice, but can’t stand it now!
•    Political views – more open-minded now.
•    I didn’t like naps when I was little, but now I love them!

Over time, my preferences about many things have changed. I used to like traveling, staying up late, and a good challenge. Now, when I travel, it must be well worth the tiresome tasks of packing and unpacking the many items women think they need. When I stay up late, I prefer not to set an alarm, and my body still pays the next day. When I face a challenge, I often dread the process of working through the task and am not as confident of my readiness. Then again, these changes may simply indicate that I’m “older and wiser.”

People’s likes and dislikes change: “every day adds a new layer of character” (http://www.pickthebrain.com/blog/people-do-change/#066L5hhq0BxudxAR.99). A change of preference is simply a new wrinkle on the face of who we are. But, I may need to make a list of my family’s most current food preferences for Sunday lunches.
