North Butler Elementary and Green River Schools Identified by KDE for Honorable Mention List
On September 8th, 66 schools were identified as Honorable Mentions, for schools across the state in regards to teaching conditions, school safety and student achievement. There were two schools chosen from the Butler County School District, North Butler Elementary and Green River School both made the prestigious list.
"I feel very blessed to be a part of NBES. It is a great honor for NBES to be recognized by KDE. None of this is possible without great teachers/staff, intelligent and motivated students and a parent community that strives to make North Butler the very best school in the state. The people I work around and the students I work for is why I truly love my job as principal at North Butler. We can always grow as a school, I ask any parents who have suggestions for improvement to share those ideas with me anytime," said Josh Belcher, North Butler Elementary Principal.
To be labeled as Honorable Mentions the Kentucky Department of Education used a 4 phase process to narrow the list to 66 schools from the 1,233 public schools of the Commonwealth. The first phase was to reach the minimum threshold of 50% response rate on the Kentucky TELL survey, a survey that identifies the working conditions of the school and the effectiveness of the school leadership. Schools that ranked in the 3rd and 4th percentiles regarding the TELL survey move on to phase ll. From there, the school data was examined in relations to school safety practices. Those advancing on from that level then were passed on to an Advisory Team where instructional practices and student achievement was reviewed. The 66 schools remaining after the rigorous guidelines were examined made up other Honorable Mention listing with representation from each of the State Board/Judicial Districts.
"The TELL survey is just a shadow of the way teachers and students feel about your school. Green River is rich in traditions for holding students to the highest expectations while they are attending our facility. This high regards for standards only comes with a shared vision of both stakeholders from Department of Juvenile Justice and our quality teaching staff. It is such an honor to be recognize by KDE for the creating a climate hospitable to education, one that cultivates leadership in others, and improves overall instruction while fostering school improvement. I humbly give all credit to the students, DJJ staff, and teachers for making any such award possible. The reward I receive is in the successes and failing forward I see daily with our students. The ultimate goal for our residents is to see them turn mistakes into milestones for future success," said Ben Annis, Principal of Green River School.
"On behalf of the Board of Education and all of the board members, I just want to say what a great honor for two of our schools to be chosen in the top 66 schools in the state of Kentucky. The recognition was based on working conditions, school safety, and student achievement. These three areas are critical to the success of every school. I want to say thank you to each student, parent, and faculty/staff member. This is a great accomplishment," said Scott Howard, Superintendent of Butler County Schools.
