GAME PREVIEW: Bears, 'Cats set to tangle at Brownsville

Against the backdrop of a homecoming crowd and a game billed as the ServPro Kickoff Classic, the Butler County Bears will square off tonight against the Edmonson County Wildcats at Brownsville.  The game is set for a 7 p.m. kick-off.  Both teams were successful last week.  The Bears easily dispatched Logan County 46-6 at home.  Meanwhile, Edmonson routed Caverna 47-0 at home.
"We have the utmost respect for Coach Kyle Pierce and the Edmonson County Wildcats.  They are a very hard-nosed team that gets after it on both offense and defense," said B.C.H.S. Head Coach Ryan Emmick.  "Edmonson will play a physical style of football and will come after us for four quarters.  We are their homecoming game and the game is being sponsored by ServPro, so this game is a huge event for them.  We are looking for a huge crowd and great atmosphere come Friday night," added Emmick.
Coach Emmick expects an intense atmosphere - one his team must meet in order to be successful.
"We have to improve our execution on both sides of the football and meet their intensity while staying focused on our assignments.  Edmonson has changed philosophy some from what they have done offensively and defensively in the past, yet one thing remains the same: Edmonson will line up and play a very physical brand of football that we must be mentally and physically prepared for," said Emmick
Defensive backs coach Brian Bivens has his eye clearly on the passing game that Edmonson may bring.
"Oftentimes when a team switches to the spread offense, you will see several instances where the receivers may look confused as to what exactly their route may be. Watching Edmonson County on film, this is not the case," said Bivens.  "Coach Pierce and his staff have done a tremendous job coaching their guys up on the offense and there is no confusion as to what they are doing."
Coach Bivens describes the Wildcat receivers as "very athletic and extremely quick off the ball."
"They run precise routs, never give up on a play, and they understand that if their quarterback is under pressure and on the move, they need to make themselves available to him, and they do a great job of it," said Bivens.  "They are the type of receiving core that will cause a secondary to have fits all night long. We are going to have to do a tremendous job of sticking with the coverage when the quarterback breaks out of the pocket if we want to give ourselves a chance to have some success against this potent offensive attack," added Bivens.
According to Barry Frazier, offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach for the Bears, Edmonson County has moved to a 3-5-3 defensive scheme this season.
"This allows them to get more speed on the field, especially facing a spread-based offense.  There is no better way to do that than by getting as many athletes on the field as possible.  Coach Pierce is getting more agile athletes in space and letting them run around and make plays," said Frazier.  "Edmonson's front three have agility and quickness that allows them to play this style of defense against most if not all opponents.  They also have the ability to cover the pass and stack the box to defend the run with this type of defense."
Coach Frazier expects Edmonson's defense to attempt a bit of defensive confusion.
"We will see multiple stunt packages to fill the running lanes and to try and keep our offense in a continual guessing situation.  Edmonson pursues the ball really well and gets a lot of athletes in on every play," said Frazier.  "We will have to be disciplined in each person knowing their job to be effective come Friday night in an expected high-intensity type of game and atmosphere."
The game will be aired live on The New Q 101.5 FM with John Embry, Cody Donaldson, and Josh Scott.  The game can be streamed live at this link:
