Dr. Jackson Brings Spinal Decompression Therapy to Morgantown

Dr. Ryan Jackson

Dr. Ryan Jackson, owner of Jackson Chiropractic, PLLC, is proud to announce the addition of Spinal Decompression Therapy to his practice.

"The Decompression Therapy has already been very successful with several of my paitents," said Dr. Jackson.  "This is a vital treatment option for patients suffering from disc pathologies."

Dr. Jackson provided the following explanation of Spinal Decompression Therapy:
The discs within the spine, separate and cushion the individual bones (vertebrae) that make up the spine. They form openings between the vertebrae so spinal nerves can exit and serve all areas and organs of the body. Discs also allow the spine to bend and move in day to day activities, while absorbing the shocks and bumps similar to the shocks on an automobile.  The disc structure is made up of a tough outer wall surrounding a gel-like core (nucleus pulposus) that allows the disc to “bounce-back” repeatedly. The wall is made up of layers of elastic tissues, crisscrossed to enhance strength and durability.
When a disc herniates, bulges or ruptures and presses on spinal nerves, it causes great back and/or neck, arm, and leg pain. The most common causes of disc distress are (but not limited to): injury, repeated occupational stress over a period of time, and a slow process known as disc degeneration and thinning.
Damaged discs rarely heal without proper treatment due to their constant internal pressure.

How it Works:
Therapy on a spinal decompression table creates a negative pressure in the center of the intervertebral disc, thereby creating a suctioning effect or vacuum phenomenon in order to retract or reduce the size of the herniated or bulging disc's gelatinous internal nucleus pulposus, thus diminishing or eliminating nerve compression, while at the same time creating an osmotic gradient which helps bring nutrients and water into the disc. Since intervertebral discs have poor circulation, they depend upon receiving their nutrition through diffusion across the end plates of the vertebrae above and below.

Treatable conditions with Spinal Decompression therapy:
Herniated disc, degenerative disc, sciatica, facet syndrome, pre- and post- surgical cases, and spinal stenosis.
Decompression therapy is something everyone with disc conditions should consider before immediately resorting to surgery. Many times, conservative care can allow patients to avoid surgery with less expense and a faster recovery time.
