Butler drops pair of games to Edmonson in first district contest

The Edmonson County Wildcats and Lady 'Cats came to Morgantown on Friday night and left with two 12th District wins over Butler County.

In the first game of the girl-boy doubleheader, the Butler County Lady Bears played a strong game but fell 61-47.  In the nightcap, the Bears came up short 64-54 in what was a close game throughout.

The Lady Bears played Edmonson tight for much of the game.  With the score tied up 9-9 after the first quarter, Butler County took a 11-9 lead and then a 13-10 lead in the second before the Lady 'Cats rallied to take a 29-17 halftime lead.

The third quarter was Butler County's best as the Lady Bears outscored the Lady 'Cats 16-12.  A three-pointer and a field goal by Allie Easley and a basket by Addison Hall pulled the Lady Bears to within five at 35-30.  Butler still trailed 41-33 at the end of the third quarter.

Free throws by Hall, Callie Cardwell, Cheyenne White, and Shawna West kept the Lady Bears close down the stretch but Edmonson finally pulled away for the 61-47 win.

In the second game,  Rex Henderson had 15 points and Zack Burden had 14 but it wasn't enough as Edmonson County turned in a strong fourth quarter en route to the 64-54 win.

The Wildcats raced to an early 8-0 lead before the Bears' offense got going.  All of Butler's first quarter points came on three pointers - one each by Burden, Henderson, Caleb Deweese, and Baylee Anderson.

A pair of three-pointers by Will Moore and a couple of free throws by Henderson early in the second quarter gave the Bears a 23-18 advantage.  The Wildcats went on an offensive run at that point with the Bears getting outscored 15-6 to fall behind 33-29 at the half.

The game remained close in the third.  Another three-pointer by Henderson gave the Bears a 37-36 lead at 5:37 in the third but another Wildcat scoring spurt gave the visiting team a 45-39 lead going into the final quarter.

A key point came in the final quarter on a controversial call.  Trailing 51-47, Butler's Baylee Anderson was whistled for his fifth personal foul - charging -  and then was quickly given a technical foul, as well, for what the official perceived was an inappropriate reaction by Anderson to the call.  Although Edmonson struggled at the line for most of the game, they were able to sink a few key free throws late in the game to help secure the 64-54 win.
