Boys and Girls Club's Annual Dinner

Glendal Coleman and Bruce White

The Boys & Girls Club of Butler County held their Annual Appreciation Dinner on Saturday, October 11th at the Butler County Educational Complex.  Board president James Runion welcomed everyone to the dinner, State Representative C.B. Embry Jr., gave the invocation, and club members led everyone in the pledge of allegiance.

Housing Authority Director Anita Jenkins
Long time board member, Anita Jenkins introduced the guest speaker, Ellie McKinney Harbaugh, Senior Director of Resource Development of the United Way of Southern KY.  The Butler County native, Harbaugh, is the daughter of Desper and Norma McKinney.  She spoke of her summer jobs working at the Housing Authority and caring for seniors.
“The elderly people I worked with were a blessing to me,” said Harbaugh.  I was fortunate; I had a stable home that taught me it was important to go to school and work.”

Harbaugh talked about a few of the challenges that  face today’s children.  “Approximately 58% of kindergarteners are not ready for what is expected of them, poverty is also a major concern, the impact of technology , and the lack of parenting and role models, are just a few of the challenges,” said Harbaugh.
She then shared a United Way video featuring Boys & Girls Club member David and his experience with the club, as well as other United Way programs.
In closing, Harrbaugh encouraged everyone to, “Love your community and be proud, support the children and set examples, and those of us that can, should help.”

Next, Club Director Bruce White presented Glendal Coleman with an honorary membership to the Boys & Girls Club and a posthumous award for his brother, David.
“The Coleman Brothers have supported this Club since the beginning, they have always stepped up when there was a need,” said White.
White was assisted by club members in the presentation of certificates of appreciation to over 80 donors for their support of the club.

“We want to say thank you to everyone who volunteered their time and/or gave money to our club this year.  This is truly a community effort.  Together, we are improving Butler County, one child at a time,” added White.

Former director Stan England gave the closing remarks and led everyone in the reading of the Boys & Girls Club Code.
