Bears Maul Cougars 48-18

The Butler Co. Bears moved to (4-1) with a solid win over Class 5A border rival Grayson Co. by the score of 48-18.  The Bears took the opening drive marching down the field in nine plays; QB Rex Henderson scored from one yard out.  Logan Richardson’s point after kick good.   


     The Bears Defense special teams grabbed the next score, as junior Dalton Lee blocked a Grayson Co. punt, which was scooped up by sophomore Daltyn Havens who ran it in for the touchdown. Richardson’s kick was good, 14-0 Bears.
     The Cougars then responded with two quick scores and at the end of the first quarter of play, the score read Bears 14, Cougars 12.  But the second quarter was all Bears, rolling 21 unanswered points to take a 35-12 lead into the locker room at the half.   All three scores came on the arm of QB Henderson to sophomore wide receiver Brenden Shanklin. Shanklin had touchdown catches of 6, 39, & 68 yard catch-run touchdowns; all three Richardson kicks good.


        The third quarter opening possession, on just the second play the Cougars fumbled back to the Bears; two plays later, senior Ian Embry ran fifteen yards for the score, kick good Bears led 42-12.


       The Bears defensive unit got stronger as the game went on. D Lineman junior Isaac Flener had his best game to date with 4 tackles, 7 assists. The Bears forced the Cougars to commit three turnovers in the third quarter; two interceptions and a lost fumble.  Senior defensive back Jacob Hixenbaugh snagged two interceptions on the night, while junior defensive lineman Lake Cameron recovered the lost fumble.  Henderson also snagged a pick on the night.  The Cougars on the night, turned the ball over (5) five times.


      Early in fourth quarter of play, Henderson scored from six yards out, capping off a five play drive, score 48-12 Bears. This by KHSAA mercy rule forced a running clock the remainder of the game. The Cougars would put up one more score on their last possession of the night.
     The Bears now at (4-1) moved into the weekly rankings of Class 2A, as the #9 team in the state. The biggest game of the season is set, as the Bears travel to Owensboro to take on district foe, the Owensboro Catholic Aces. Who by the way is ranked #4 in Class 2A this week.  Game time is 7pm, Friday, Sept. 25th.
