BC Relay For Life

Saturday, August 22nd hosted lovely weather in the mid-80's and mostly clear skies, which was optimal weather for the commencement of the 2015 Butler County Relay for Life ceremonies. The event began at roughly 6pm at the Butler County High School football field with a welcome given by Emily Wallace, the event organizer. An invocation was given by Matthew Embry before the pledge of allegiance. Rachel Johnson sang the National Anthem. Mayor Phelps was called to say a few words.

"I've lost members of my own family to this disease. I love taking part in these events where families come together to move forward and take action against cancer." said Phelps.

Ginny Lockhart came forward to express the story of her daughter, Raven Noelle Durbin.

Prior to the first lap of walking, the cancer survivors present were awarded with Relay for Life medallions. Families were asked to come forward to present the medallions to their respective family members. The first lap was given to the tune "Celebration" by Kool and the Gang. The survivors walked a single lap around the track. The second lap was for the caregivers who have supported others with the disease.

Shera Lindsey sang several songs for the crowd before a short dance party commenced. Following traditional party dances such as the Cupid Shuffle and Electric Slide, a series of various walks and activities began. These events and walks included but weren't limited to cornhole, scavenger hunts, Candy Land lap, Favorite Sports Team lap, Twister, and Freestyle lap.

A group of BC Band volunteers assembled in front of the stage area to perform musical interpretations of various songs on saxophone.

At 9pm a luminary ceremony was conducted. All lights at the football field were turned off. Luminaries placed on the guest team bleachers were arranged in a way such that it spelled the word "hope". Derik Cain spoke during the ceremony.

Following the luminary, many more events were slated to occur. These events included an obstacle course, Monopoly lap,  Rook tournament, Card lap, board games, Blue and White lap, Minute to Win it, Scrabble lap, and YMCA lap.
