Back to School 2015-16: North Butler Elementary

Parents and students of North Butler Elementary:
I would like to welcome each of you back to the 2015-16 school year.  I hope that each of you have had a relaxing and fun summer and ready to get back to school to further your education.  North Butler Elementary has great momentum as we are coming off of a year of many accomplishments as a school.  These accomplishments cannot be obtained without the full commitment of excellence from students, teachers and the parents.  NBES has a tradition of great parental involvement and support and we hope to continue that in the upcoming school year.
Our teachers and instructional assistants have been busy preparing for the upcoming school year.  They have been attending professional development for both instruction and for positive behavior supports to help provide the very best experience for your child.  I can say with complete honesty and confidence that our building provides some of the very best teaching you will find at any school.  They go above and beyond their expectations to ensure that your child not only learns but finds joy and a sense of security while they are at school.   I would like to take time to thank Mrs. Donna Annis for the commitment she has given to NBES and wish her the best of luck in her new position at the district office as supervisor of elementary instruction for Butler County Schools. With her departure we bring in Ms. Shelbi Martin to the family as a 3rd grade teacher. We are excited to the contributions her talents will bring to NBES!
I also want to take time to acknowledge the work that the custodians have done this summer.  We are very proud of the NBES campus and the job our custodians do to keep it looking top notch is remarkable.  The amount of work and time it takes to clear out each room, strip and wax a floor, paint the walls amongst other duties in a large task, and they do it to perfection. We will surely miss Mr. Robbie Parrish as he has accepted a job elsewhere, but with that I would like you to please welcome Teresa Forshee to the NBES staff. If you see Jennifer Jones, Teresa Forshee or Robbie Parrish please thank them for all they do to provide us with a clean, well maintained building.
As we get things back up and running there are many upcoming events that you should know about:
-Early Literacy Camp from July 20th -23rd from 8 to 10 AM each day for incoming kindergarten students.  The students will be working with their 2015-16 teacher learning early literacy skills that will help build a foundation for the skills they will be expected to successfully learn this coming school year.  If you have a child coming into kindergarten just show up around 7:30 on the 20th to give yourself plenty of time to register if you have not already done so.
-Open House Back to School Night will be July 30th from 5:00-7:00 PM. (Kindergarten/PK will begin at 4:00) We hope you can make arrangements to attend on this night to meet face to face with teachers and staff of NBES!
-First Day Back for Students – August 6, 2015

New for 2015-16 School Year:
-NASP Archery will begin this school year.  Our coaches are in the process of being certified and we will be sending more information for this once school begins.
-PBIS Positive Behavior Intervention Supports will begin phasing in starting in August.  You may see noticeable changes in the way NBES monitors, addresses and supports behaviors.
-CUBS Club will stay in place for the 15-16’ School year.  However, excused absences do not count against CUB Club status, 2 or less unexcused absences per semester, no office referrals, and being on the honor roll will qualify your student for the CUBS Club
-Boys and Girls Club is in the works to provide a NBES site.  Student will be able to sign up for evening care through the Boys and Girls Club without being bused to Morgantown.
-All Breakfast and Lunches provided at NO COST to the students
-Lexia Core 5 Reading and Math has been once again purchased by the school for every student.  We encourage you to access these programs at home to enrich your child’s math and reading skills.  These programs are used to supplement your child’s education; not to teach them.   We have highly qualified teachers who provide a great education, but we recognize that one teacher cannot always be there for every child’s unique needs at any one moment.  Lexia Core 5 and Math Whizz programs support classroom instruction, while providing interventions targeted to your child unique needs and provides an opportunity to be engaged in practice when the teacher is not present.
I want to please encourage you to continue being active in your child’s education.  Developing a strong positive relationship between the home and school is very beneficial to a child’s education.  I encourage family members to support the school in decisions that our professionals make and desire your input in the process; we want what is best for every child.  Please read the weekly newsletters from your child's teacher, look at student work in Friday folders, and feel free to participate in Parent-Teacher Organization work.  Keep up with weekly events and news with us on the school webpage, Facebook, Remind 101 or Twitter.  We will also send out One Call reminders for important events or scheduling changes.  I also want to encourage you to make attendance a priority.  Missing school rather it is avoidable or not puts a great strain on the education of your child.  More than 3 absences that are unexcused will be reported as truant.
We are very fortunate to continue providing health services for students through a partnership between Barren River District Health Department and the Butler County Board of Education.  I encourage parents to contact Nurse Lori Raeuchle at North Butler any time they have questions or want assistance with their child's health needs.

Please feel free to reach me if you have concerns, ideas or support.  I can be reached via email at [email protected] , 270-526-8936 or 270-999-1510.  I look forward to an exciting and productive year with you and your child!

Take Care,

Josh Belcher, Principal
