Back to School 2015-16: Butler County Middle School

BCMS Mission:
Expanding Minds, Strengthening Bodies,
and Nurturing Spirits For Life Long Success

On behalf of the faculty and staff at BCMS, welcome to the 2015-2016 school year. To those students and parents who are new to BCMS, we extend an especially warm welcome to you as your educational journey continues.  A new school year is an exciting time and the faculty and staff at BCMS is working hard to ensure that every student has a positive and productive start.  Our goal is to provide students with learning experiences that will allow them to grow and plan for their future.

We are very proud that our school was recognized as a High-Progress School, placing us in the top 10 percent in improvement for middle schools in 2013-2014 and last year we continued to improve our test scores.  We are continuing to work to keep our school moving forward.  With the support of the Butler County Board of Education, we have added additional math and reading classes to this coming years BCMS curriculum and will be moving to an 8 period day to help assure students are college and career ready.

Parental involvement is a very critical factor to a student’s success.  We encourage parents to be as involved as possible in their child’s education.  We restarted our schools P.T.O. last year and members of our P.T.O. exceeded expectations.   If any parent is interested in being part of this group this year, you can contact our P.T.O. President Stephanie Todd at 270-493-0794.  To the students, we ask that you reflect on your goals and strive not only to pursue personal excellence, but also to demonstrate respect, integrity, and support for one another.  We are here to support and encourage you as you explore different possibilities and grow as learners.

Mr. Howard and the members of the BCMS SBDM council are still searching for the new principal of BCMS.  The new principal will be announced on July 23rd at 9:00 a.m. in the BCMS Media Center.  On behalf of the faculty and staff of BCMS, I would also like to take this opportunity to also welcome the additions to our staff.  We are very excited about the prospects of working with these individuals.

William Sutton Jr. will be filling a custodial/maintenance position.  He will be replacing J.R. Bryant who moved at the end of last year.  He has been working hard with our custodial staff helping to get our school ready for the first day of school.  We are excited to have Mr. Sutton on our staff.

Sherlyn Bratcher will be moving from teaching careers and technology to take over as the new BCMS Counselor. She will be taking over for Mr. Ron Harpe who retired at the end of last year.  Ms. Bratcher has a lot of fresh ideas and has hit the ground running in preparation for the up and coming school year.  She will be at school during Jump Start on July 30th to help new students get enrolled into BCMS.

Jordan Evans will be teaching Band full time at BCMS this school year.  He did his student teaching at BCMS and volunteered last year, and we are glad to have him on our staff as a full time member.  He is excited about having the opportunity to work with our many gifted musical students full time at BCMS.

Kristen Hughson will be teaching Practical Living and Career Studies Technology at BCMS this school year. She will also be taking over our STLP program at BCMS.    She will be replacing Ms. Sherlyn Bratcher who moved into our counseling position.  Ms. Hughson has taught business and technology at Hart County and Warren Central over the last two years and will be a nice addition to our staff.

Leslie Smith will be teaching 7th grade reading this year.  She brings a lot of experience with her to BCMS teaching 7 years at Olmstead Elementary in Logan County and last 4 years at Jackson Academy in Warren County.  We are excited to have Ms. Smith in the BCMS family.

In regards to the facilities, our campus looks great. Our tremendous custodial staff has been hard at work all summer preparing the school for the students’ return. A special thanks to Dale, Melissa, Sherry, and James for all their hard work and dedication to the students of Butler County.

Jump Start for our sixth grade students will be July 30th from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.  Buses will be running from North Butler Elementary School, Davis Crossroads, Kuntry Korner, and town. We encourage all sixth graders to attend.  We will be doing enrollments on that day for any students who have moved into our district. We will also be having an open house for sixth grade parents and students that night at 5:00 p.m.  Just a reminder to all parents, we do post our newsletters and other information on our school website each Monday. Our website can easily be accessed through our district website at http://www.butlerschools.net/.   You can also follow us on facebook at https://www.facebook.com/pages/BCMSNews/218358144886057?ref=hl&ref_type=....

BCMS is a Title I school.  This means we receive money from the federal government in order to provide additional services in math and reading.  We need feedback on the program from parents.  Therefore, we would like to ask parents to go to www.surveymonkey.com/s/FBQHSPQ and take a Title I survey for our school.  We appreciate you taking the time to fill out the survey.  Paper copies of the survey can also be picked up at BCMS.

With students only being in homeroom during testing, we are not going to post homerooms.  We will be giving 6th grade students who come to Jump Start their schedule that day.  Also, those parents who have signed up for the IC parent portal can start viewing your child’s schedule the last week of July.
Student achievement is our first priority at BCMS. If you have any questions or comments please feel free to contact me at school (526-5647) or on my cell phone (999-0198) any time a need arises. Stop in and visit us at BCMS anytime!!
