August is Purple Heart Month

On Friday afternoon Butler County Judge Executive David Fields and Morgantown Mayor Billy Phelps signed a proclamation declaring August Purple Heart Month in the County and City, encouraging Butler County residents to show their appreciation for the sacrifices Purple Heart recipients have made in defending our freedoms, to acknowledge their courage and to show them the honor and support they have earned. They were joined by V.F.W. Post 5837 Ladies Auxiliary President Lynda Knight, V.F.W Post 5837 Ladies Auxiliary Americanism Chairman, and Veteran Sharone Nash , Purple Heart Recipient.
The proclamation reads as follows:
Whereas the Purple Heart is the oldest military decoration in present use, having been initially created as the Badge of Military Merit by General George Washington in 1782.
Whereas, the Purple Heart is awarded to members of the U.S. Armed Forces who have been wounded or killed in combat by a declared enemy of the United States.
Whereas, there have been former Butler County residents who have paid the ultimate sacrifice in giving their lives in the cause of freedom, and there are numerous combat-wounded veterans residing in Morgantown, Butler County, and as Purple Heart recipients contribute to their community in countless ways; and
Now, Therefore, we Judge Executive David Fields and Mayor Billy Phelps Mayor of Morgantown, County of Butler, Kentucky do hereby proclaim August 1 through 31st to be Purple Heart Month.
