Andy Sullivan's Against the Grain: Return of the Snap

My second Snapple column has arrived.  Why a column about Snapple, you ask? No, it’s a Snapple cap column.  Here are a few more interesting tidbits that you probably wouldn’t ordinarily realize.  I know I wouldn’t.
Until its demolition in 2012, 1% of Greenland’s total population lived in a single apartment building called Blok P.  Babies are born with about 300 separate bones.  Adults have 206.  The world’s largest silver nugget (1,840 lbs.) was found in 1894near Aspen, Colorado.  A group of jellyfish is called a smack.  So the next time someone says “here comes a smack”, is it jellyfish or are they going to smack you?
You transfer more germs shaking hands than kissing.  Each year, the moon moves away from the earth by about four centimeters.  The average lead pencil can draw a line 35 miles long or write roughly 50,000 English words.  Some bears build nests in trees for sunbathing and resting.  Tennessee was previously named Franklin after Benjamin Franklin.
A Venus flytrap can eat a whole cheeseburger.  The optimum depth of water in a birdbath is two and a half inches.  Tennessee banned the use of a lasso to catch fish.  In only 7.6 billion years, the sun will reach its maximum size and will shine 3,000 times brighter.  Tennis was originally played with bare hands. The peach was the first fruit to be eaten on the moon.  I’m surprised it wasn’t a Moon Pie(ba dum).
The average woman is 5 inches shorter than the average man.  The average cat can jump 5 times as high as its tail is long.  The mango is the most consumed fruit in the world.  When creating a mummy, Ancient Egyptians removed the brain by inserting a hook through the nostrils.  Didn’t you always want to know that? There are more species of fish in the Amazon River than the Atlantic Ocean.
Cats have 2 sets of vocal chords: one for purring and one for meowing.  A fresh egg will sink in water; a stale one won’t.  A baby caribou can outrun its mother at 3 days old.  Ferret comes from the Latin word for little thief.  Some bears build nests in trees for sunbathing and resting.  The official color of California’s Golden Gate Bridge is International Orange.  In the spirit of my favorite four week series Galavant comes this gem: dueling is illegal in Paraguay as long as both parties are registered blood donors.
People don’t sneeze when they’re asleep because the nerves involved in the sleep reflex are also resting.  A crocodile can’t stick out its tongue.  There are 293 ways to make change for a dollar.  Dolphins are unable to smell.  Queen Cleopatra of Egypt was not actually Egyptian, but a Macedonian Greek.  Cleveland, Ohio is home to the first electric traffic lights.  Twins have a very high occurrence of left-handedness.  It is illegal to play annoying games in the street in the United Kingdom.  The only lizard that has a voice is the gecko, thus the commercials.  The scientific term for sneezing is sternutation.  At 5 feet, the whooping crane is the tallest bird in North America.  And finally, polar bears can smell a seal from 20 miles away.  I hope this column meats your seal (get it) of approval.
