Andy Sullivan: Against The Grain

Since Calendar Girl is coming up this weekend, I figured I’d go back in time.  I remember helping out for many years.  When I was in middle school, I was just carrying chairs and stage paraphernalia to the gym or auditorium, wherever the event was being held that particular year.  I would sit there in the audience watching the competition, wondering if I’d get a shot at being one of the escorts, a real “cog in the wheel” as it were.
Come high school, I was still helping out.  In addition to bringing in chairs, podium and decorations, I helped hang the wire and throw pieces of decorative fabric over the wire.  And that was just part of it.  There were the balloons, the stage, and much more.  So, I know just how much work goes into what everyone sees on that one Saturday night.  It doesn’t just happen, believe me.
I did this up until after high school and into college.  Why, you ask? I just wanted to help.  But let’s go back to high school for a minute.  My senior year, I broke through, so to speak.  My duties the previous years on the night of competition consisted of being the runner, meaning I would run the results from judge to stage.  This final year, I was asked if I’d like to be an escort.
I wasn’t sure about being an escort.  I wasn’t exactly one to command a stage.  Then I thought, “People will be looking at the girls, silly.  You’re just out there”.  I agreed and had fun with it.  Plus, what teenage boy doesn’t relish the idea of walking arm in arm with beautiful girls across a stage? I’ll be honest, I was nervous the first few trips across the stage.  The girls were more nervous, though.  So I acted as the calming agent.  They had fun and so did I.
Soon after I graduated, they started the centerfold guy contest.  I was a little bummed.  I totally could’ve won that! I clean up pretty good, that’s all I’m saying.  Good luck to all the participants this weekend.  Most of all, have fun! That’s what it’s all about.
