Andy Sullivan: Against the Grain

Halloween is upon us.  As a kid, I always loved dressing up and going trick-or-treating.  There are several favorite costumes that I remember.  At Third District Elementary, we would have Halloween parties.  The costumes I wore to school, I would later wear trick or treating.  I remember one year going as Michelangelo, my favorite Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle.  My dad even made me nunchuks to go with the costume.  I could’ve gone as Ninja Turtle Donatello one year, as I have a wooden staff in the garage.  I also took karate as a kid, so the staff could’ve been for that. Since The Karate Kid was popular when I was a kid, I’m sure I was Daniel Larusso.
Forrest Gump was big when I was in high school.  So naturally, I went to high school dressed as Forrest.  Did it bother me that I dressed up at 15 years old? Not really.  It worked in my favor, too.  There was a girl at school named Jenny.  How perfect was that?! Several years ago, I attended the fall festival in Morgantown dressed as the late Michael Jackson (Thriller Edition).  The picture of me as MJ with John and Diane is still on my Facebook page.  And yes, I still have the entire costume.
I posed this question on Facebook.  One female friend said her favorite costume as a kid was Cinderella, adult is Catwoman.  I also posed the question of favorite candy to get.  I got answers from Kit Kat’s to caramel apples.  I was partial to Kit Kats, Snickers and Milky Way bars.  Alright, these days I’m still partial to Snickers and Kit Kats. I just don’t eat them as frequently.  My best friend told me as a kid, her favorite she dressed as was Dolly Parton.  As an adult, a witch is her favorite. I also got gypsy as an answer, as well as witch and Reese’s Cup.
Whatever or whoever you’re dressing up as, have a happy and safe Halloween! Try not to eat too much candy all at once.  It’ll still be there tomorrow.  Also, half price candy at the stores.  That’s always a plus.
