Andy Sullivan: Against The Grain

“8th of November” by Big and Rich and “November Rain” by Guns N Roses are the only noteworthy songs with November in the title.  That doesn’t really make for a full column, does it? Therefore, I’ll talk a little about Thanksgiving.
Thanksgiving means something different to everyone, I’m sure.  We gather around with family and friends.  Eating is almost assuredly involved.  Football, friends, games and movies might be involved as well.  “The biggest thing”, my sister adds, “is to pause and reflect on what you’re thankful for, even beyond daily gratitude”.
Earlier I mentioned “8th of November”.  That, if you’ve heard the song, brings to mind our men and women fighting for this country.  I, as are many, am thankful for those who served, past, present and future, every single day.  You’re going to hear things like “well we greedy people are just thankful for one day and then we go back to not being thankful”.  That’s actually not the case with a lot of people.
I certainly don’t take the traditions I mentioned above for granted.  I also know that holidays such as Thanksgiving and Christmas aren’t easy for some.  My thoughts and prayers are with those who are less fortunate.
I’m certainly thankful for my salvation, my family and friends.
Happy Thanksgiving and I’ll be back next week.  Or, as Matthew McConaughey said to close Saturday Night Live this past weekend, “Just keep livin’.  Happy Thanksgivin’.”
